Why I Hit Reset (And Why You Might Need One Too)
There was a moment recently that stopped me in my tracks.
I was tired.
Sore.
Frustrated.
A bit overwhelmed.
But more than anything… I felt off.
Not physically off — I can handle that.
But out of alignment.
The moment that made me realise
I’d been ramping up my training.
I had my sights set on racing Ironman 70.3 Western Sydney, so naturally, my training load increased.
And at first, it felt good.
Progress. Discipline. Momentum.
But then something small started happening.
Darcy and Nate would ask me to jump on the trampoline…
or come play at the park…
And I just didn’t have the energy.
Worse — I didn’t even want to.
That’s when it hit me
After saying no a few times, I started to feel it.
That uncomfortable feeling of:
“This isn’t the kind of dad I want to be.”
Because for me, family comes first. Always.
Not training.
Not business.
Not goals.
Family.
And without realising it, my training had started to take from that.
The reset
So I stepped back.
And instead of pushing through… I paused.
I asked myself a few simple questions:
- What are my goals right now?
- What actually matters most?
- Am I living in alignment with that?
And the truth was… I wasn’t.
The realisation
I’d given myself three years to build toward an Ironman.
And realistically?
I’m only just coming into that third year.
There was no urgency.
No need to force it.
No need to push at the expense of everything else.
So I made a decision:
👉 I’m not racing this year.
What changed
That one decision did a few things immediately:
- It took pressure off my training
- It gave me more space in my week
- It allowed me to reinvest time into my business
- But most importantly… it gave me back time with my boys
Because the reality is:
I’ll always have another opportunity to train.
But I won’t always have this time with them.
They’re almost 5 and almost 8.
And I’ll never get these years back.
What a “reset” actually is
A reset isn’t about stopping everything.
It’s about realigning.
It’s stepping back and asking:
- Is my family where I want it to be?
- Is my health where I want it to be?
- Is my stress under control?
- Am I actually enjoying my life?
And if the answer is no…
You adjust.
What changed for me
My training has dropped slightly.
But I feel better.
More present.
More energised.
More aligned.
And ironically…
That’s usually when progress actually starts happening again.
The lesson
Most people don’t need to push harder.
They need to pause and reassess.
Because it’s very easy to drift.
To slowly move away from what matters most… without even realising it.
Final thought
If you’ve been feeling:
- tired
- sore
- overwhelmed
- disconnected
It might not be a motivation problem.
It might just be time for a reset.
And sometimes…
That’s the most powerful thing you can do.
