1. Pain that lingers for more then 3-4 days post exercise:

Rest and ice is a great recovery method. It will get rid of most aches and pains. Especially if you have just done a new exercise or upped the workload. Muscle stiffness after exercise is commonly referred to as DOMS (delayed onset muscle soreness) this is the body’s way of telling us to settle down for a little while. We recommend looking up your local physical therapist, if pain last longer than 3-4 days.

2.Re-occurring soreness:

The body is great at adapting to new workouts or exercises. Ice, and stretching post workouts is a great way to minimise post work out stiffness. If pain is occurring regularly after exercise, it might be time for a second opinion.

3.Noticeable or visible changes:

You know your body better then most, if you notice one knee more swollen then the other, or your left arm is suddenly weaker then the right, pick up the phone.

4.Traumatic events such as rolling your ankle:

Landing awkwardly and hearing a click, pop, or crack should always be checked out by a qualified health care professional.

5.Sharp localised pain:

Is often an indicator of a more serious injury. Dull aching injuries are often due to inflammation and can be treated with ice or over the counter medications, and resting the injured tissue. But if the pain strikes you suddenly and you can point clearly to where it is hurting, you know the drill.

6.Over the counter “pain killers” just aren’t cutting it anymore:

If you have to take them for more then 2-3 days, they aren’t solving anything and just masking the problem. Give your friendly physical therapist a call.

Do any of these signs or symptoms sound familiar? it’s recommended getting in touch with your local physical therapist, whether it is your local Northern Beaches chiropractor, physiotherapist, or your osteopath, give them a call and put any worry to rest.

Prevention is always the best cure, if you haven’t seen your favourite movement specialist lately, it may be worth getting in for a check up.
